Breakfasts Fit for a Cowboy!

Written by YMCA Volunteer Andrea Lee

It’s Stampede breakfast time! Rummage around the back of your closet, dig out your cowboy hat and dust off your boots. The excitement of cowboy culture that fills the city during the 10-day event is coming to YMCA Calgary by way of some stompin’ good eats!

Join us at our annual branch Stampede breakfasts – with tasty, healthy treats sure to fill the tummy of all cow-folk far and wide!

  • Shawnessy YMCA: July 12 from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. (A great success!)
  • Crowfoot YMCA on July 13 from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. (TODAY! Mosey over, Y’all!)
  • Eau Claire YMCA on July 15 from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m.

Here are a few essentials to wear to make sure you don’t stand out like a city slicker during the Stampede:

• Jeans and a plaid shirt: These are necessary staples to a basic western-style ensemble (plus most of us already have these in their closet).

• Cowboy boots: Just remember real cowboys never tuck their jeans into their boots!

• Cowboy hat: A good cowboy hat isn’t just a fashion statement, it is also useful to protect you from the sun during those hot afternoons at the rodeo.

Have a fun-filled Stampede everyone!

Lana’s Update from Costa Rica

YMCA staff member Lana Dionne updates us on to her travels in Costa Rica doing volunteer work:

It’s been quite the journey and the volunteer work has made it all worthwhile.  The town of San Ramon (pop 70,000) is nice and cool (humid during the day) but inland, so no water. We do volunteer work 4 days then have 3 days off.

My spanish isn’t great, but I realized that the kids don’t need you to speak English, they just want you to be with them. One group of 4 girls I met today were soooooo darned cute, probably 5-7 years old. They were drawing with chalk on the cement so I joined them and would draw a picture, say of a house, and then I would write beside it ‘house’. The girls would then write beside mine, in Spanish, ‘casita’.

We played all morning and when they came back after their lunch, their 4 little faces were looking through the window of the missionary, calling to me from outside to come and play with them. So super cute!

This Thursday, ACTIVATE to support Acts of Love and Peace

Munira Nagji is a 2010 YMCA Calgary Peace Medal recipient in the Humanitarian category.  The Humanitarian category is for those who are not simply involved in peace projects, but who have made it their life’s work.  That certainly describes Munira (see video here)!

Recently Munira and others started a foundation, Acts of Love (TheseActsOfLove.blogspot.com), and this Thursday they host thier first fundraiser, ACTIVATE!   Check out the performances and show your support on July 14, from 6:30-9:30 at Eau Claire Market. For details, visit the ACTIVATE! Facebook event page

Do you know a person like Munira or a group like Acts of Love who is also making a difference for peace? We need nominations for the 2011 Peace Medal awards! Learn more about Peace Medals here, or go straight to the nomination form!
