Extensive research has shown that children who engage in resistance training under the supervision of a professional strength coach can see performance benefits without compromise to regular growth and development.
During this time the focus should be on proper lifting technique and appropriate resistance. Body weight based exercises, light dumbbell work and some machines can be used with great effect however should be prescribed by a certified fitness professional based on the biological and chronological age of the child.
At all Calgary YMCA branches, the minimum age for unsupervised resistance training on the weight floor is 12 years. Weight floor orientations are mandatory for all children under the age of 16 and are available at no charge. Options are available outside the weight floor area for children under the age of 12. Feel free to ask the weight floor staff for ideas and suggestions.
